Contact An attorney todayThe N-600 Application for Certificate of Citizenship proves that someone born outside of the United States to a U.S. citizen parent is a U.S. citizen themselves. This ensures children of U.S. citizens born overseas receive all the benefits and entitlements that come with citizenship status.
This form is often filed by individuals born outside the country who claim they acquired citizenship at birth through their parents. The N-600 is an important document under U.S. immigration law for those who have not lived in the United States, but have earned their status through familial relationships.
Those who secure citizenship by other lawful means may also apply for this certification to prove their U.S. citizenship and status as a resident of the United States.

Becoming a U.S. citizen is not just a legal status—it's a gateway to new rights, responsibilities, and the fulfillment of the American dream, whether by birth or through naturalization.
There are two general paths to U.S. citizenship. One is by birth, while the other is through naturalization:
By Birth: Some people are automatically granted U.S. citizenship by being born in the U.S. Generally, a child born in the U.S. or abroad to U.S. citizen parents is granted U.S. citizenship. For those born abroad, the N-600 document can be a valuable resource for solidifying their citizenship status. Birthright nationality from the U.S. is governed by strict legal guidelines, which can be complex in cases of children born outside the United States.
Naturalization: This process covers lawful permanent residents (green card holders) on their path to becoming U.S. citizens. Those eligible for naturalization must fulfill various criteria, such as continuous residency, physical presence in the U.S., good moral character, passing a civics test, and an English language proficiency exam.
The journey to becoming a U.S. citizen often surprises applicants with legal obstacles that create delays or even block them from obtaining their U.S. citizen status. Many applicants find themselves stuck in legal limbo due to errors on forms, missing documents, or failing to meet deadlines. Others find it difficult to navigate the legalese and complex requirements that come with citizenship applications.

To apply for naturalization (U.S. citizenship), you need to have lived in the country for five years as a Lawful Permanent Resident (green card holder). This timeline is shorter if you obtained your green card via marriage to a U.S. citizen. You must have physical presence for at least half of the required period. You must have maintained continuous residency in the United States during the required time period. Moreover, you must prove that you have good moral character, pass a civics test concerning United States history and government, and demonstrate an understanding of basic English.
Naturalization may take between six and twelve months, depending on different factors. Following the submission of their N-400 applications, the applicants will have to undergo biometrics and background checks and schedule interviews with USCIS officers. They also have to pass a U.S. Civics test and demonstrate English proficiency. Other delays may also apply to specific cases.
The naturalization interview is one of the most important parts of the citizenship process. A USCIS officer will review your application and ask questions to verify your eligibility for naturalization. You also need to take a civics test on important facts about U.S. history and government and an English language test to show you can read, write, and speak in English.
